Emotions can be the most tricky things we experience. We believe in our emotions; we honor our emotions. When we feel slighted, angry, upset, happy, these experiences are as real as can be.
The tricky part is that taking responsibility for our own emotions is painful. When my anger, or pain, or sense of loss is something that I am responsible for, then my need to blame becomes self-directed.
And that’s why it’s so easy for emotions to be blamed on others. Well, let’s focus on negative emotions for now. Anger, resentment, loss of control, shame… these are some negative emotions which are usually caused by someone else. Errr, I mean most of us usually like to BELIEVE these emotions to be caused by others.
But no one forced you to be angry. No one forced you to feel embarrassed. No one forced you to feel worthless just because you made an error in judgement.
A major achievement in any human life, is to learn how to accept full responsibility for the emotions you experience. It is the path to emotional freedom. Freedom to experience emotions for what they are, nothing more, and nothing less.
